The doors slammed shut, the engine started, and someone laughed shrilly. William turned and went, not seeing any reason to stay. If they had no need for him to go along with them, what possible need could they have for him to remain and see them off? None, he told himself fiercely, and pretended his eyes were burning because of the wind. And if they had no need for him, neither had he any need for them.

But when he came in sight of the road again, he waited until he’d seen them drive past before continuing on his way.
